SKID ROW
presents
OVERDRIVE from INFACTO
THE STORY
In the year 2510 all nations in the universe have joined together
in one universal confederation. A single government represents
all people.
Although absolute peace reigns between all nations, a growing crime
rate troubles the Confederation. Most law enforcement is handled by
small, privately run crime fighting teams. You have just joined one of
these teams, the Civil Defense Unit (CD Unit).
Day by day commercial cargo ships are attacked by Intergalactic pirates,
who are responsible for most of the crime in the known universe. Some
companies have recently been victims of deadly raids against their
space installations. They have been granted carte blanche from the
Confederation to use any resource to clear up this problem.
Your mission
A mining company has been notified of some strange activity at their
starpost on the planet Alderabane. Instead of calling on the Confederation
army, the company decides to hire the CD Unit to take a look at the
problem and report back to them.
Upon their arrival, the CD Unit discovers a multitude of pirate
installations on unexplored regions of the planet. On receiving your
report, the company orders the CD Unit to rid Alderabane of all
pirates in any way they see fit. You are to destroy all pirate
ships, plant life and missile launch emplacements. When this has been
accomplished the pirates will be weakened and you will be able to
battle them in air-to-air combat. There is only one way the CD Unit
can destroy the entire pirate installation.
Once all the pirates have been killed or have been driven from
Alderabane, your mission will be completed. To be certain that all
the pirates are gone you must find a Research Module which will
enable you to locate any moving object. This may not be easy...
HOW TO LOAD OVERDRIVE
First, verify that you have the three disks which are furnished with
OVERDRIVE. The BOOT DISK and the DATA DISK, which must always be
protected (protect tab up). And the GAME DISK, which must never
be protected (protect tab down). The disks are shipped with their
protect tabs in the correct configuration.
If you want to save one or more games, or start a new game before
finishing the current game, use any 3 1/2 inch disk and follow the
instructions for the GAME DISK. With each new GAME DISK you must
start a new game. You never need to format a disk used as the GAME
DISK. OVERDRIVE automatically formats any GAME DISK. WARNING...
any disk used as a new GAME DISK will lose all data previously saved.
The GAME DISK furnished with OVERDRIVE is guaranteed by INFACTO,
however any additional GAME DISK provided by the user cannot be so
guaranteed.
Virus protection
INFACTO guarantees that OVERDRIVE is shipped virus free. To protect
against virus infection, never de-protect the BOOT DISK or the DATA
DISK. If the game does not load, switch off your machine for at least
30 seconds. Upon turning your machine back on, the virus will have
been removed from memory.
Beginning play
OVERDRIVE works on all Amigas. To play, follow the instructions below.
If using an Amiga 1000, you must first load your "Kickstart" disk.
First turn on your Amiga and insert the BOOT DISK in drive 1 (DF0:).
The game will start in less than one minute. If a disk change is
necessary during game play, OVERDRIVE will display a disk change
message.
IMPORTANT: A Disk must never be changed if the game does not request it.
This could destroy your disk drive. See your Amiga User's Guide for
details.
Now that you have begun a game, OVERDRIVE will ask you to choose between:
1) Starting a new game (NEW GAME is displayed), or
2) Continuing an old game (CONTINUE is displayed).
The first time you play OVERDRIVE, choose NEW GAME by pressing the
Fire button. If you wait a few seconds the "High Score" screen will
be displayed.
THE GAME
Beginning a new game
Your Pilot
After having chosen NEW GAME, a screen will appear with the six
pilots of the "Civil Defense Unit". Choose a pilot with your
joystick, mouse or keyboard. Push the Fire button on the joystick,
or the space bar on the keyboard once your choice has been made.
The Selector
(In the following description of the Selector, click* means to push
once on the Fire button of the joystick, the left button of the mouse,
or on the space bar of the keyboard. The numbers* in parenthesis
refer to the figure on the opposite page).
After choosing your pilot, you are directed to the Selector. Here you
choose your ship, arms, and options. You also decide if the sister
module will be played by the Amiga, or by a co-pilot (the co-pilot
is played by a second player). These choices will be presented to you
after each mission. At any moment you can move the cursor to an
object and click* on it to obtain information on the object. Once your
choices are made move to the Information Screen (2)* and click* in
order to leave the Selector. The game will then begin.
The four choices you have are:
1. Choosing a new pilot (1)*
If you want to change pilots, move the joystick up or down. Since
each pilot has an assigned ship, the ship will also be changed.
2. Choosing a new ship (7)*
Move the joystick to the right or left to change ships. In this case
the ship will change independent of the choice of pilots. Information
about your ship will be automatically displayed.
3. Choosing a co-pilot for the module (3)*
Click on the option in the lower left corner of the screen in order to
request or return a co-pilot.
4. Choosing armaments and options (4 and 5)*
Move the cursor to the ON/OFF (6) display. Click* to select ON or OFF.
An arm or option is selected when its indicator is ON> You can choose
a maximum of four arms/options.
End of game
The game ends when you have no energy left in your ship or when all
missions are completed. In the first case GAME OVER is displayed.
In both cases you can inscribe your name in the table of HIGH SCORES.
You can then begin a new game!
Continuing a game
To continue a game which has been previously saved select CONTINUE
with your joystick and push the Fire button. Then simply follow the
instructions which appear on the screen.
HOW TO PLAY
(The numbers in parenthesis refer to the figure on the opposite page).
The Ship: (1)
The ship is directed by the first player. If the ship explodes, the
game is terminated irregardless of what happens to the Module. You
must protect your ship! An on-board computer controls the ships shield.
The Module: (2)
The module is controlled by an optional second player or by the on-board
computer. It can shoot like the mother ship. The module has its own
energy supply (5-brown bar). If it loses all its energy it will explode.
The mother ship must then find a new module.
The Options: (3)
The options are detached parts of the ship. They automatically follow
the ship according to various displacement programs. They shoot at
the same time as the ship, or at the same time as the Module (depending
on what options have been chosen or found during play).
The Energy: (4-Violet Bar)
Your ship has a full supply of energy at the start of every game. The
energy level must never reach zero, or else your ship will fall to the
ground and crash. Energy is consumed as the ship moves and when
your shield is too weak to protect the ship. Sometimes you can find
stores of energy during your voyages, be sure to pick these up if you
can.
The Shield: (9)
Your shield protects you against enemy fire, and against the enemy
ships. Each time you are hit your shield diminishes in power and
turns red for a few instants. As it loses power the shield turns more
and more black, until it disappears completely! When you no longer
have a shield you will need a lot of energy to avoid exploding when
hit by enemy fire. The shields of certain damaged enemies are left,
intact, behind them...grab them if you can!
Movement:
There are two reasons to move your ship:
1) to avoid attacking enemies, and
2) to look for new arms and energy supplies. Don't forget that
all movement consumes energy.
To move use your joystick, mouse, or the arrows on your keyboard,
you can also use the keys F and V to move up and down, and the keys
J and K to move left or right.
The second player must use a second joystick, the mouse, or the arrows
of the PAD (next to the numeric keys at the right side of the keyboard).
Armament:
Your armament is shown on your dashboard. Available are five cargos
(6) each of which has five slots (7). At any time during the game
take a look at the dashboard to verify what type of cargos you have
and how many shots you have left (8). A cargo can have only one type
of armament. However, a slot allows you to use a single armament in
several different ways. To augment your shooting capability you must
capture the arms which you find on your path.
When you choose a slot, you have the possibility to drop an entire
cargo. This will cause an explosion on the ground which could destroy
many enemies and/or their installations...but watch out! You will lose
all the slots which the cargo contained!
There are three ways to choose your weapons. Either push the Fire
button for a few moments, hold down an Amiga key on your keyboard,
or bush the right hand button of your mouse. After holding one of
these buttons down for a few moments the word "ITEM" will turn red,
and you will be able to pick any one of your arms which you may need
at the moment!
During the time that you are choosing arms, your ship cannot change
direction! Move left or right to change cargos (empty cargos are
automatically changed). Move up or down to change slots. Choose the
slot EXPLOSION to drop a cargo. The cargo will be dropped the next time
you fire.
Firing:
Before firing you should know that your store of shots can be exhausted.
To know how many shots (8) are left, look at the Dashboard. You also
possess an energy level (4-blue). It indicates the power of your shots.
The more powerful the shot, the more destructive it will be.
You can find many types of shots and there are many different ways
to shoot. It is up to you to discover all the possibilities!
To shoot, push the Fire button on your joystick, the left button of
your mouse, or the spacebar of your keyboard.
The second player must use a second joystick, or the mouse, or any
key on the PAD (but not the arrow keys).
A shot is taken when the Fire button is released. If your joystick
has an automatic shoot function, it will work normally.
Pause:
If you want to stop play for a while without losing the game, depress
key P or F10 on the keyboard. When you wish to resume play, push
again on either one of these keys.
Saving a game:
To save an unfinished game, depress key S of F9. The game will take
a few moments to stop while it is being saved. Once saved, the game
will be in "Pause". To restart the game, depress key P or F10.
Self destruction:
If you want to end an active game, depress keys ESC and Ctrl. This
will completely destroy your ship. After such a destruction, to
begin play again you will have to start a new game or restart a
previously saved game.
